American Visions
Among the most distinctive American voices in architecture and urbanism over the past century are Buckminster Fuller, Louis Kahn, Denise Scott Brown and John Portman. This selection of books by and about these visionary figures explores ideas and approaches that continue to influence how we think about cities, society and the future.
Complementing these design-focused perspectives is Austrian author Theo Deutinger's new book, All About U.S.: 250 Years of the United States of America, which offers a sharp European perspective on the United States, its founding myths, history and contemporary culture.
Design
From Bauhaus editions to Buckminster Fuller’s “Spaceship Earth,” and from Kenya Hara’s philosophy of white to the cultural history of Helvetica, our design books explore the ideas that continue to shape how design is understood and practiced.
Developed with leading designers, scholars and institutions, the list spans graphic, product, industrial and systems design – from manifestos and monographs to historical surveys and practical guides.
Architecture
The built world is constantly being imagined, debated and remade. From bacteria to buildings, from landscapes to territories, from modernist landmarks to future urban visions, our architecture books span critical and historical research as well as direct testimony to the architectural upheavals of our time.
Behind many of these publications are long-term collaborations with leading research institutions and with architects, historians and critics. Several volumes are also devoted to the work of Louis Kahn, to Japanese architects, including Kenzō Tange, Kiyonori Kikutake and Kazuo Shinohara, and to Latin American architecture.
Art and Photography
Many of our art and photography books share a profound interest in the notion and experience of place. Discover Lukas Felzmann’s decades-long exploration of California’s landscape, Christian Moeller’s site-specific installations, and the distinctive perspectives of architectural photographers Iwan Baan, Leonardo Finotti, and Hélène Binet.
The collection also features Denise Scott Brown’s photographic observations, which informed her thinking as an architect, planner and educator. There is room, too, for the unexpected: Karl Blossfeldt's remarkable botanical studies, an exploration of the relationships between music, movement and the mind, and even a photography book designed to be read aloud to children.
Society
In 2004 we published The Face of Human Rights, followed by several visual readers on enduring global issues such as democracy, faith, water resources and climate. Beyond these tomes, our books on society bring together research, ideas and visual expressions across disciplines to engage with urgent social and political questions.
Theo Deutinger’s cult book Handbook of Tyranny anchors the selection, mapping spatial systems of control through gripping data visualization and text, while The Poverty Line by Chow & Lin, presents global inequality through a visually compelling comparative framework. These are looks that offer different ways of reading the world through its systems and spaces.
