Massimo Vignelli

The Vignelli Canon

In "The Vignelli Canon" the late Italian designer Massimo Vignelli distilled his influential design philosophy into a concise, handheld guide to good design. The book lays out fundamental principles such as simplicity and discipline, which guided Vignelli’s work across graphic, product, signage, and corporate design. Highly regarded as a timeless resource for students and practitioners alike, it remains a classic introduction to modernist design thinking.

The book is structured into two parts: the “intangibles” cover conceptual ideas such as semantics, coherence and appropriateness, while the “tangibles” focus on practical elements like grids, typography, color and layout. Illustrated with numerous examples from Vignelli’s own projects, the volume conveys his belief that good design transcends style, rooted instead in logic, purpose and clarity of communication.

“The first half of the book, with sets out Vignelli's fundamental design principles, is one of the clearest guides to the modernist design aesthetic available anywhere.”
– Creative Bloq

an easy-to-read, handheld guide to good graphic design and typography by the late legend Massimo Vignelli
– SEGD

“It's a concise—yet highly biased—introductory book on design that I think can be enjoyed by non-designers and designers, especially for those who are interested in modern design (...) now that I’m a little older, I can actually appreciate his dogma without agreeing with it.”

Massimo Vignelli

Italian graphic designer Massimo Vignelli (1931-2014) was one of the seminal figures in the development of visual communication in the second half of the twentieth century. He studied architecture in Milan and Venice before branching out into the world of design. Together with his wife Lella, with whom he worked throughout his life, Vignelli founded Unimark International, the first design consultancy with an international scope and offices worldwide in 1965, Vignelli Associates in 1971, and Vignelli Design in 1978. His works include graphic and corporate identity programs, publications, graphic and architectural exhibitions, signage, interior design, furniture and the design of consumer products for many American and European companies. Much of Vignelli’s work has become iconic and is exhibited in the permanent collections of museums worldwide.
