Spirale 5 (original issue, 1955)

Internationale Zeitschrift für konkrete Kunst und Gestaltung

Spirale magazine, published in 9 issues between 1953 and 1964, was a platform for young artists and documented the development of abstract and concrete art and poetry in Europe. spirale set itself apart from other magazines with its original and distinctive look and attitude and is one of the most important testimonies to the development of art in the 1950s.

spirale 5 was published in 1955 and was dedicated to Josef Albers (1888–1976), who taught at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm that year. The German artist, art theorist and educator was one of the pioneers at the Bauhaus and later a professor at Black Mountain College and Yale University, known for his examination of the phenomenon of perspective. He is famed for his homage to the "square series."

On the occasion of Josef Albers’s 130th birthday, we are offering some rare original issues of spirale 5. The issue contains lithographs of perspective studies and a text by Josef Albers as well as works by young Swiss artists in the field of concrete art.
