Over the past decade, Refik Anadol Studio has redefined the possibilities of media art at the intersection of aesthetics, data and machine intelligence. Since 2014, the studio has pioneered the use of custom AI models trained on vast datasets, from nature and urban life to cultural memory, to create generative realities that merge art, architecture, science and technology. Transforming weather patterns, ocean currents, city archives, museum collections and brain scans into monumental visual experiences, the studio expands the vocabulary of contemporary art.

This first comprehensive volume traces more than ten years of innovation in data sculpture, AI-driven visualization, and large-scale immersive installations. Featuring essays by leading voices in architecture, media art, and artificial intelligence, alongside reflections from researchers and collaborators, it situates the studio’s work within broader cultural and technological contexts. Conceived as both a record and a projection, capturing a practice that is both technologically speculative and deeply humanistic.

Refik Anadol (b. 1985, Istanbul, Turkey) is an internationally renowned media artist, director, and pioneer in the aesthetics of data and machine intelligence. He is the Director and co-founder of Refik Anadol Studio in Los Angeles and teaches at UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts, from which he obtained a Master of Fine Arts. Refik Anadol Studio brings together a globally diverse team of designers, architects, data scientists, and researchers—originating from 10 countries and fluent in 15 languages—who share a deep commitment to inclusion, equity, and cross-cultural collaboration at every stage of artistic production. Anadol is also the co-founder of Dataland, the world’s first Museum of AI Arts.  

Anadol’s work locates creativity at the intersection of humans and machines. Taking the data that surrounds us as primary material, and the neural network of a computerized mind as a collaborator, Anadol offers us radical visualizations of our digitized memories and expands the possibilities of interdisciplinary arts. Anadol’s AI data paintings and sculptures, live audio/visual performances, and immersive installations take many forms, while encouraging us to rethink our engagement with the physical world, public art, decentralized networks, and the creative potential of machines.

Efsun Erkiliç

Efsun Erkılıç (b. 1982, Istanbul, Turkey) is a visionary artist, cultural researcher, and co-founder of Refik Anadol Studio. With a career spanning over a decade, Erkılıç boasts extensive experience in project management, having coordinated and showcased multidisciplinary artworks at more than 70 venues worldwide. She manages global projects at Refik Anadol Studio, ensuring the seamless blend of human-machine collaborations and high-quality execution in every step of the Studio's interdisciplinary projects. Erkılıç is an established painter. Her work captures an eclectic spectrum of colors and shapes, chronicling her myriad mystical, inner, and physical odysseys. Beyond her visual art, Erkılıç crafts performance pieces that meld bodily expression with philosophical insights into the human condition, all from her Los Angeles-based studio. She holds a BA in Visual Studies and an MA in Media Studies from Bilgi University, Istanbul.

Pelin Kivrak

Pelin Kivrak is a researcher and writer specializing in the intersection of arts, writing, ethics and emerging technologies. Since the founding of Refik Anadol Studio in 2014, she has been instrumental in shaping its research unit, crafting curatorial texts that have been presented at over forty major international venues. Beyond her research and curatorial work, she is an Assistant Professor at Emerson College. Kivrak holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from Yale University and a BA in Literature from Harvard University.
