My long friendship with the dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design has led to intense discussions about the importance of the book in teaching and research that have culminated in significant publications. Ecological Urbanism is of particular note. The book has been translated into four languages and has just come out in a revised English edition.
In the Life of Cities and Ethics of the Urban discuss the conditions of life in the contemporary city. The school’s archives have produced monographs on Kenzo Tange and Kiyonori Kikutake, and Instigations documents the 75-year history of the design school.
I have been teaching the seminar “Communicating Architecture” at GSD sporadically since 2009, a course that examines the editorial process and how it deals with complex content, ultimately shedding light on the conditions prevailing in book design today. (lm)
