Massimo Vignelli

The Vignelli Canon

The famous Italian designer Massimo Vignelli allows us a glimpse of his understanding of good design in this book, its rules and criteria. He uses numerous examples to convey applications in practice — from product design via signaletics and graphic design to Corporate Design. By doing this he is making an important manual available to young designers that in its clarity both in terms of subject matter and visually is entirely committed to Vignelli’s modern design.

“The first half of the book, with sets out Vignelli's fundamental design principles, is one of the clearest guides to the modernist design aesthetic available anywhere.”
Creative Bloq

“It's a concise—yet highly biased—introductory book on design that I think can be enjoyed by non-designers and designers (...) now that I’m a little older, I can actually appreciate his dogma without agreeing with it.”

Massimo Vignelli

Italian graphic designer Massimo Vignelli (1931-2014) was one of the seminal figures in the development of visual communication in the second half of the twentieth century. He studied architecture in Milan and Venice before branching out into the world of design. Together with his wife Lella, with whom he worked throughout his life, Vignelli founded Unimark International, the first design consultancy with an international scope and offices worldwide in 1965, Vignelli Associates in 1971, and Vignelli Design in 1978. His works include graphic and corporate identity programs, publications, graphic and architectural exhibitions, signage, interior design, furniture and the design of consumer products for many American and European companies. Much of Vignelli’s work has become iconic and is exhibited in the permanent collections of museums worldwide.
